Assignment : Dues!

to reiterate:

type specimen books due this week,
11.19 (mon), 11.21 (wed).

type set books due week after thanksgiving
11.26 (mon), 11.28 (wed).

at least five samples (small graph printed to size) of typefaces you may want to set according to topic chosen due this week,
11.19 (mon), 11.21 (wed).

you may include your icons (or illustrations/photography, though i prefer icons) and your own writing.
overall prefer your writing and icons, but i understand that not everyone wants to write their own text.
therefore, it's optional what text you choose.
credit the author and text if you use someone else's work.

icons and all other course work to date updated on your blog by tonite.

The file only keep in the URL 7 days from 2007/11/13 18:36 or up to 100 download.
So If you need it download it now.

-------------
Here is additional message from Gen. about this template.
template looks great mayumi.
sure, please send it to them. or post and tell them. really nice.
except, they'll need to use less copy because when they get to size 10 or 11 it'll run off the page.
and, when they set larger leading, even the 7 will run off the page.
maybe set with proper leading requests so they don't get confused?

Assignment FAQ: Type Specimen Book

> 1. for the type specimen book, do we choose any 20-30 serif and
> sen-serif typefaces that we want, and set a block of text from any
> source?

no. not just any.
choose good faces.
i provided a list.
you research and find some good faces as well.

DO NOT SET TRANSITIONAL FACES IF YOU WANT TO PLEASE ME.
I'M NOT A FAN.

set them for yourself, but don't submit them to me for projects....
unless you can make a VERY CONVINCING TYPE BLOCK with a transitional face.
if you don't know what i'm talking about, LOOK IT UP.

>
> 2. so the all typefaces in the specimen book will have 8 pages each, right?
(9pt, 10pt, 11pt, 12pt, + rag right and justified for each size)

no.
8, 9, 10. and 11.
if you feel 11 is too large for a text face, set 7 instead.
7/8, 7/9. 7/10. 7/11 rag and justified
8/9, 8/10, 8/11, 8/12 rag and justified
9/10, 9/11, 9/12, 9/13 rag and justified
etc.
yes, each size will have eight pages.
remember the italic and bold line at the end.
good to have.

> 3. what do you mean by make a type specimen book, one for text and onefor display?
yes.

> are we making 2 books?
yes.

> 4. for the small book assignment, is it going to be 100% text?
or dowe incorporate any design/images?

mostly text based.
you may add drop caps, need to use headlines, maybe chapter heads, pages numbers (folio), name of book and author on each spread, subheads, etc.
you may use icons, but sparingly.

this is supposed to be a text type book to show your type skills only.
layout too, but only in so far as it relates to copy blocks and
hierarchies of typography.

> if it is text based, what do you mean we have to be interested in the 'topic'?
don't set a whole bunch of text that bores you.
it's difficult enough to set great text blocks.
if the topic bores you, it'll be that much more difficult.
